Yellowjackets swarm (Sept 21) – maybe eating the dying Queen? – outside of their nest which is visible in the man-made drill hole in this block of stone used as a bench on the Platte River in Littleton, CO. The drill hole would have been made by man and used to blast the rock from its original site, but now the rock is used as a bench. The drill hole goes in one side and out another, and Yellowjackets have built a nest inside the man-made cavity. Woe be it unto whomever decides to sit here! Photographer: Tom Loucks

What is the October bug dressed in Halloween colors? It is the Lady Beetle larvae, which will grow up to be the more recognizable Lady Bug. Found on a rock at my Greenwood Village home Photographer: Terry Hanford
