A pelican waits patiently for someone to turn on the spigot so it can get some fresh drinking water. Taken on the island of Mykonos, Greece, at the harbor, suggesting either that the pelican knows that people get water there, or that the pelican has done this before! Image submitted by Tom Loucks.

Great Horned Owl (Bubo Virginianus) at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge- Along the Wildlife loop drive at approx mile 5. This old tree is about 200 yds off the road and this Great Horned Owl was perched on a low branch. I captured this with my Tamron 150-600 mm at 600 mm focal length. Specifics: ISO 1600, Tv 1/1600, f/8, manual mode. This is the second time I’ve captured this owl out there. Photographer: Todd Grivetti Todd M Grivetti Photography
An oyster catcher family has adapted well to living in a wildlife “park” in Kincraig, Scotland. Every year, the mother gives birth at the foot of the same tree, so park rangers mount pedestrian barricades around them for protection from cars and people. Sometimes, the chicks scamper beyond the barriers, and then there ensues a bit of a free-for-all where the parents are chasing the chicks, and the human visitors are straining for pictures. Northglenn, CO Water Treatment Plant – Between Federal Blvd and Huron St on 112th Ave.
For a series of years, 2010 – 2014, an American Bald Eagle would visit the cottonwood tree on the western edge of a pond that is part of the Northglenn Water Treatment Plan. I assume that the tree was a stopping point on an annual migration but I cannot be certain that it was the same individual.

Ever since incessant construction of beach-front, high rise condominiums and apartment complexes commenced in the Algarve region of Portugal in the early 1970s, white storks have faced continued shrinkage of habitat. Some of the more fortunate (and resourceful) storks have sought refuge on the roofs and belfries of Catholic churches, while others have moved farther inland to nest, ironically, on the abandoned factory smokestacks of a by-gone era. Bird Banding at Barr Lake, CO Sept. 2011
For the Bird Banding at Barr Lake, netting was placed in a wood area to capture birds. Captured birds were untangled from the netting, placed in a bird bag and taken to a central area where they were identified, weighed and had an identification band placed on their legs. They were then released.
In the picture, the guide is allowing a young lady to closely examine a captured bird just prior to the bird’s release.

Western Flicker. June 2011 Northglenn, CO
A pair of Western Flickers took up residence in the weeping willow tree in my backyard on Sully Way in Northglenn, CO. The tree was nearing end of life making it easy for the Flickers to peck through the bark to create a comfy nest site.
