The Urban Wildlife Photo Club is a unique Colorado photography organization.

The club was founded as part of the Urban Wildlife Partnership in 1988 for the sole purpose of providing photos of urban wildlife to illustrate a book. That goal was achieved when Close to Home: Colorado’s Urban Wildlife was published in 1990. Although the initial charter had run its course, a significant number of the members decided to continue on with other projects and an expansion, beyond urban, to all wildlife, nature and travel subjects. Those projects have included the development of a Code of Ethics for wildlife photographers (in conjunction with the Colorado Urban Wildlife Partnership), a statewide children’s art contest, Earth Day slide shows, and the introduction of International Dawn Chorus to the United States.

Today we are a club with a varied calendar of activities. Our monthly meetings differ substantially from other photo clubs. We feature guest speakers from the fields of wildlife and the environment as well as photographic specialists and representatives from camera companies. Our speakers have included world-renowned personalities such as George Lepp; Chris Baines, a noted environmental consultant from England; Sharon Matola, director of the Belize Zoo and John Fielder. We have also featured animal experts on bats, flammulated owls, raptor rehabilitation, tracking, bears, butterflies and beavers. In addition to speakers, our meetings usually include opportunities for members to show their work in a non-competitive setting and receive a constructive critique from either the monthly speaker or a talented and entertaining professional wildlife and nature photographer.

Our club organizes field trips to urban and not so urban areas for photographing wildlife and natural areas. Some of our field trips have been to Denver/Boulder wildlife areas, Mt. Evans, Rocky Mountain National Park, Monte Vista National Wildlife Refuge, Pawnee Grasslands, and North Park.
